Todos Santos has a quirky charm that has brought on comparisons to Taos, New Mexico. Initially founded as a Mission in 1724, it had a rough start after being nearly destroyed by a Pericú rebellion a decade later. The mission was abandoned in 1840, and Todos Santos regained some prosperity as a sugar town before its aquifers were depleted. Now, Todos Santos remains one of Baja California’s best locations for artists and its restored colonial buildings have lent the entire town a charm that blends well with its idiosyncratic, New Age element.
The Eagle’s hit song “Hotel California” was believed to have been inspired by Todos Santos. Now, visitors can stay at The Hotel California—a popular option even though the song never referenced a particular hotel.
